Experiences of Being a Leader article written by Mildred Stephenson

“There is no such thing as a self-made man. You will reach your goals only with the help of others”

Now, the Chief Executive Officer for TransUnion Zambia, the one and only Credit Reference Bureau in Zambia at the moment shares her experiences.

The opportunity presented – one must have a vision. From an early stage in my life, I had someone that inspired and had confidence in me.

The support I received from my siblings motivated me to lead an exemplary life. At my first workplace, my boss had so much confidence and trust in me. He also always gave me challenges and supported me in solving them. I enjoyed all this and work. I was motivated and encouraged to always strive to do the best and take on new challenges so as to always learn new things. My achievements helped my boss meet his goals.

What I realize today is that the treatment I received from my boss contributed to making me a leader at a very early stage in my career. This was only possible because someone had enormous trust and confidence in me.

From my life experiences and including in the corporate world for over 20 years now, I have learnt, that being a leader whether in the workplace of an organization or be it outside work in our social life, to lead you must have a vision, share the vision and ensure that you motivate, inspire and support those working with you as they will help you succeed.  As a leader in an organization you must embrace the organisation’s vision and understand how this fits into your own vision.

The question asked, “Is it enough to only motivate and inspire your team to achieve your vision”? The answer is capital – NO! As you motivate and inspire it is necessary to provide support to your team.  This support will be provided if you know what your team is doing, acknowledge and applaud their successes.
These all sound like straight forward tasks and easy to achieve in order to lead and lead Good, which may be the case if all things were equal in life. Unfortunately, life is complex.  You will face many challenges/hurdles which will affect your leadership style. I have learnt over the years that it is best to stick to your vision, be confident, be accountable and take responsibility for your actions each day as it comes.  Again this brings me to that ultimate item that helps you succeed – It is the power of GOD!  I can testify that I have gone through many challenges in my life and most often I ask myself how I really managed to overcome or get through the challenge.  I know it was and is only the power of God’s hand in my life.

To summarize my valued lessons, to lead you must:

– Have a vision

– Be Exemplary

– Challenge yourself

– Spend time with those that inspire you

– Enjoy what you do

– Motivate and inspire others

To lead is an awesome task, and a blessing, as you help make others lead and succeed too.
